Tyler Gabbert, Nebraska Quarterback

Nebraska gained another verbal commitment yesterday, June 5th. Tyler Gabbert is the 5th commitment for the Huskers and is from Ballwin, Missouri. He joins receiver Keeston Terry (Missouri), cornerback Anterio Sloan (Arkansas), and offensive linemen Mike Moudy (Colorado) and Andrew Rodriguez (Nebraska). The Huskers seem to be putting together a fairly solid class but it is rumored that Nebraska will sign a low number of recruits this year, 20 or so. Look for Nebraska to add a few more solid offensive linemen, a few defensive linemen, a linebacker or two, and a couple more defensive backs.

The addition of Tyler Gabbert, probably means that Nebraska will not have another quarterback commitment this year. Zac Lee, Cody Green and Kody Spano all have at least two years of eligibility left entering 2009. If you recognize the last name, it is because Gabbert’s older brother is former Husker commit and current Missouri Tiger Blaine Gabbert. Blaine will likely be the new starter in Columbia, stepping in for the departed Chase Daniel. It will be interesting to see how the 6’5 230 pound sophomore handles a Tiger offense that will be rebuilding.
As for Tyler, he looks like a high school freshman physically and is built like one at 6’0 190, cut from the mold of a Joe Ganz. I have seen limited video on him and he has a nice, crisp pass. He passed for 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns last season while Parkway West was 7-2. The bottom line is that Tyler is a good addition to this class and should provide adequate competition to Nebraska’s other quarterbacks when he arrives in Lincoln a year from now. Depending on whether Nebraska needs the services of Cody Green this year, which is likely, Green and Gabbert could battle it out over the next four years starting in 2010.

Games Attended

While laying in bed last night I was thinking about some of the college football games I have been to. I decided to make a list and it totaled 24 games. It is interesting to note that Nebraska is 10-1 when I attend a Husker game, 9-0 when I attend a game in Memorial Stadium and 1-1 in bowl games I go to.

I am not sure where 24 games fits in with the regular fan, but I have seen 23 of the 120 Division I (or FBS) teams play. Maybe someday I can claim to have seen all 120 teams play in person.

Probably the most memorable game on this list is Nebraska's 32-28 victory over Michigan in the 2006 Alamo Bowl. Nebraska scored first, but Michigan quickly responded with 14 unanswered points. Several more scores by both teams kept it close, until Michigan put on a surge and went up 28-17 in the late 3rd or early 4th. Though it look bleak, the Huskers continued to fight and several touchdowns later and a two point conversion, the Huskers were perminatley ontop 32-28. Michigan had one last drive. A sack led to Michgian using their last timeout. On the last play Michigan attempted about 10 laterals and most of the players thought the game was over with a tackle on about the 50 yard line. Michigan, not hearing a whistle, smartly continued to advance the ball with two more laterals but were stopped at the 15 yard line by two aware Nebraska defensive backs, Titus Brothers and Zac Bowman. Michigan fans complained that the Nebraska team stormed the filled before the play was over, which they did. However, if you watch the play, there are clearly Michigan staff and personnel on the field at the same time. You can see Brothers and Bowman having to weave their way through guys with Michigan polo shirts on as they stop the play. If anything it would be offsetting penalties. Either way, it was a good game.

Check out the play and notice the blue shirts on the field at the end of the play.

9/26/98…Florida State 62, Duke 13
Notes: My first college football game…amazing experience.
12/25/02..New Mexico 13, UCLA 27 (Las Vegas Bowl)
Notes: What I remember about this game was at a pre-game lunch a UCLA student said “if UCLA loses to New Mexico, I will give up my scholarship”…at one point it looked like New Mexico may do it.
8/30/03…New Mexico 72, Texas State 8
9/13/03…New Mexico 7, BYU 10
Notes: BYU played a fairly dirty game.
9/27/03…New Mexico 24, New Mexico State 17
10/4/03…New Mexico 34, Utah State 7

Notes: My first Nebraska game, unbelievable experience!!! I remember the “sea of red” at night just blew me away. Nebraska didn’t play a great game, but came away with the win.
9/3/05…..Nebraska 25, Maine 7
Notes: One of things that stands out in my mind was I was sitting in my seat thinking “Nebraska could lose to Maine, MAINE!”, it was surreal.
9/10/05…Nebraska 31, Wake Forest 3
12/28/05..Nebraska 32, Michigan 28 (Alamo Bowl)
Notes: Great game that energized the Nebraska fan base. The last play of the game was memorable as BOTH Nebraska and Michigan personnel and players stormed the field prematurely as the Wolverines got the ball down to the 15 yard line after 10 or so laterals. Thank goodness to Titus Brothers and Zach Bowman making sure to stop the play.
9/2/06…..Nebraska 49, Louisiana Tech 10
9/9/06…..Nebraska 56, Nicholls State 7
9/23/06…Nebraska 56, Troy 0
11/26/08..Nebraska 37, Colorado 14
Note: A nice butt kicking of the Buffaloes.
1/1/07…..Nebraska 14, Auburn 17
Notes: A game that hurts to think about and is really what Callahan football was about. Nebraska should have won this game, but numerous stupid calls cost Nebraska the game.
9/1/07…..Nebraska 52, Nevada 10
9/22/07…Nebraska 41, Ball State 40
Notes: Nebraska barely escaped against a decent MAC team, Ball State.
12/22/07..New Mexico 23, Nevada 0 (New Mexico Bowl)
Notes: The coldest game I have been to, New Mexico play extremely well.
9/6/08…..FAU 49, UAB 34

10/7/08…FAU 17, Troy 30

11/8/08…FAU 46, North Texas 13
11/15/08..FAU 40, Louisiana-Lafayette 29
Notes: Don’t remember all the details about most of the FAU games I attended since I was working in the press box.

What is your most memorable game?
